“For the word of God is living and active…” (Hebrews 4:12a)
As part of my job, I deliver packages to homes. Every so often, I deliver a package that has two bold words plastered on all sides. These words are a reminder (to the customer) of why they had the good sense to order the product that had just arrived at their door. What are those two words??
When you think about it, this is the reason we commit our time and our energies to most anything. We take up an exercise regimen… and stay with it because… It works! We adopt a diet plan and stick with it… because: it works! We develop a deep relationship with a friend (or loved one) because… it works!
And ultimately, we turn to the Bible for its guidance and insight into God, ourselves, and living life, because… it works! I have never known anyone who has made a full-on commitment to incorporating the Bible into their daily lives who will not convincingly tell you… “It works!”
But the real question is… WHY does it work?
It’s not because it is full of life-principles for us to apply in our lives (even though it is!). It’s not because you can find a moral code to keep us out of moral “hot water” (even though it does!). It’s not even because you can find the depth of truth within its pages (even though it has!).
The Bible works for one main reason… It leads us into the knowledge of, and invites us into friendship with, the One Who made us. The purpose of the Bible is to lead us to our Creator – so that we can discover His innate goodness… and the riches of His love for us in a personal way.
That is the underlying story of the whole Bible. In its pages, God tells us the bad news of how we got into the mess we are in. Then He tells us how HE did everything that was needed to rescue us from our mess… and to bring us into the wonder of His Personal care for us.
Throughout the pages of the Bible, God is constantly inviting us to one thing…
He offers His Own divine guidance, protection, blessing, goodness, peace, and hope to any and every person who turns from doing “their own thing” to trusting in Him. The God Who has always been alive and active… invites each of us to personally experience just how alive and active He really is. This is the summation of the Word of God. It is the promise of the God (Who cannot lie), that He will become Personally involved and invest Himself into anyone who trusts Him fully.
The Bible works… because the God of the Bible works!
I think this is why there are so many “voices” today trying to convince us that the Word of God is anything but alive and active. The enemy of our souls (and “the god of this world” [2Cor. 4:4]) wants nothing more than to keep each and every human soul separated from the God Who can change and transform our lives – and fill us with divine purpose!
In the end, it is not the Bible we are believing… it is the God Who is behind the Bible… in Whom we are placing our devoted trust. Through the Bible, time and again, we are reminded that God made us, God loves us, God is worthy of our time and energies, and God eagerly desires that we belong to Him…
And through the Bible, we are reminded that HE did everything necessary to make it work in our lives.
