Yesterday, we began talking about normal Christianity.
It is based on one amazing fact… The God Who is The Almighty God is living within, and working through, those who have received Jesus and what He has done for us. Normal Christianity is God showing up through our lives – in ways that only God can do.
If we really think about what that would look like, I think we would be shocked. Human beings don’t do God-type things… yet, the message of Christ tells us that is exactly what we should expect to see… in every true believer.
Jesus put it this way… “Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these…” (John 14:12)
There it is. Right there in red and white. Jesus speaking… defining normal Christianity.
And it’s pretty simple, really. What we see when we look at the life and ministry of Jesus IS what we should see when people look at our life and ministry. God-type things, being done… through us.
One other thing about Jesus’ words… they are not just for the priests or the pastors or the super-spiritual (whatever we think that means)… Jesus’ words apply to… “whoever.” That means anybody. Everybody. The only prerequisite is to believe and follow Jesus.
The. Only. One.
That is such good news for you and me. We do not have to jump through hoops, or pass great theological tests, or spend decades learning about God to qualify for normal Christianity. We just have to receive Jesus, love Jesus, and walk with Jesus… wherever He wants us to go.
But that is no small thing. Simple, yes. Easy, no.
To truly walk with Jesus, we have to surrender all that we are… to gain all that He is.
Always the temptation for Christians is to try to ADD Jesus (and all His benefits) to our existing lives – and hope that the addition of the Christ will make us Christian enough.
I think this is reason #1 for why we do not see much of normal Christianity in our day and age.
We think we are Christian enough. We do enough good things. And we don’t do too many bad things – and we seem to think that’s good enough for God.
The harsh truth is that God only places the fullness of His Kingdom into empty hands. That simply means that to truly follow Jesus, we must follow Him only (see Mk. 8:34). We have to surrender our hearts. We have to surrender our dreams. We have to surrender the control of our lives. We have to surrender our rights.
Everything has to be surrendered to Jesus… for Jesus.
The question we struggle to answer is… is it worth it?
The answer is as simple as deciding if we want to live a nominal Christian life or a normal Christian life.
Nominal is powerless. Nominal is timid and ineffective.
Nominal is constantly struggling to overcome our flaws, failings, and weaknesses.
Nominal is full of our own inability, shortcomings, and doubts.
Normal Christianity is just like Jesus. It’s the only type of Christianity He offers us.
And thankfully, it is exactly what He has provided to us!
This is deep! If we want to be like Jesus, we have to give our just like he did, and it’s not always easy.😊
