Identity… A Chosen People

October 25

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him…” (1 Peter 2:9)

We are new creations… to live our lives pointing to the One Who created us new.

Peter’s summary statement gives us our objective… we are all to “proclaim the virtues” of our God.

But, truth be told it is a little difficult for us to feel like we are qualified to fulfill such a noble task. We fight with the memories of what we were and what we have done – and of the realization that other people KNOW what we were and what we have done. In so many ways we can feel like a fraud proclaiming the goodness of God when we are covered by the guilt of the shame of our past.

That is why God’s solution is to give us a new identity. People (including yourself!) may be well acquainted with the old you… but that is no longer who you ARE.

If we think about it, our struggles to live the true Christian life almost always stem from the ghosts of our past – and that identity we carry because of our past.

Because of our declared trust in Jesus, God does not see us (any longer) according to our past. “The old things are passed away… BEHOLD! New things have come into being.” This was God’s doing. He is not asking us to pretend to be something we are not. He is asking us to see ourselves as His new creations — as HE has made us to BE. True faith is aligning our lives (and our minds and hearts) with what God has said and done. Nothing more. Nothing less.

True faith

So job one is for us to come to the realization that we are no longer what we WERE – we ARE what He has created us to be (IN Christ Jesus).

So what are we now? The Apostle Peter helps us…

We ARE chosen. God’s choice. We did not choose Him, He chose us (see John 15:16). In the great “game” of life, God looked at each of us and declared that He wanted each of us for His team (Personally). Sometimes we can get the feeling that finding God was our idea. Nothing is further from the truth.

In fact, Jesus even tells us, No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him…” (John 6:44) Coming to God was His idea, His working, and His plan. He even gave us the ability to respond to Him.

John 6-44

So if we are in a relationship with Him today… it is not our doing. It is not an accident. It is not some grand mistake. We are the result of divine calling, divine drawing – divine choosing.

God wants us to know that, because of this, we are special to Him. So special, that He “chose us in Him before the creation of the world…” (Eph. 1:4). None of us were ever just a face in the crowd to Him. We were never just an insignificant afterthought to Him. We were always on His Mind. We were always in His thoughts. Each of us was always His choice for relationship with Him.

Imagine His joy… now that we belong to Him!

Prayer Focus: God, reveal the wonder of the fact that You chose me from “before the foundations of the earth” — and that I am special and precious in Your eyes.

God's favor

Thank you. What a wonderful truth that is so easily forgotten by the many ghosts of my past that I still allow to haunt me.

    • You are welcome. We all need a reminder from time to time… because it is a common struggle shared by so many. AND one that the enemy of God likes to keep “brewing” in our souls.
God bless you as you seek His Heart!
