“Your word is truth.” (Jesus’ prayer for His disciples; John 17:17)
Yesterday, we talked about how the truth is revealed in God’s “word.” There are three main ways…
Primarily, this is a reference to Jesus, Himself. John, the apostle, picked up on this thought and equated Jesus with the Word: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John chose this term to define and describe Jesus. But why?
Jesus came as the visible expression of God’s thoughts. The physical representation of the spiritual God Himself. When Jesus walked into your town, God was walking into your town. When Jesus spoke, you were hearing the very words of God. When Jesus healed or drove out demons, you were seeing the power of God. When Jesus wept or laughed, you were seeing the Heart of God. Right in front of you. Speaking visibly – speaking loudly.
Second, God’s word is revealed in the Bible. Many Christians actually refer to the Bible as “God’s Word.” There is good reason for this – there is no earthly book like it. The Bible is God’s Own communication with us – through human authors. One of those authors said this about the Bible: “All Scripture is breathed out by God…” (2 Tim. 3:16) This simply means that God was speaking to us – revealing His thoughts, telling us about Himself, about us, and about things we would have no other way of knowing (how the world came to be; how we can come to know Him; what awaits us on the other side of our lives, and so on…)
Third, God’s Word is revealed by His Holy Spirit. Jesus declared that it is the Spirit of God that is the key to knowing all the truth. His promise: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” (John 16:13) Good news! The “Spirit of truth” has already come! God’s gift to all His people was given at the day of Pentecost – to be with every true believer (not just the ultra-spiritual) as a Counselor, Guide, and Source of constant divine Help. And one of the primary ways He guides us is to reveal God’s words (God’s truth!) to us – ALL the truth. There is never a moment when any believer is without the ability to know what God thinks about any issue – to know what is true. The truly Christian life is lived when our spirits are in constant communion with God’s Spirit – as He instructs, leads, guides and reveals the very thoughts of God, to us.
Our access to these means of knowing God’s truth is amazingly simple… everything begins when we simply trust in Jesus. Trust His prayer. Trust His work. Trust His words. Trust His love. Trust that He is, indeed, “the way, the truth, and the life.” Trust that He has called us as His Own – and He will reveal the power of that calling, and of His truth, throughout our lifetime!
Prayer focus: God, help me to receive, and trust in, what Jesus has prayed over me.
