All Things New…

The new you… as Jesus is

“Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.” (1 John 2:6)

For the Christian, there is a question that wells up from deep within us. At some point, it is the question that every true believer will have to answer (to live the kind of life that is pleasing to God)… seek-god2The question??

What is God seeking from me?

The answer to that question is nothing short of amazing.

It all comes down to this… What we see Jesus doing in the pages of Scripture is what God sees every one of us doing! As Jesus has done, so we should be doing.

How do we know that?? Because Jesus said so: “Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these…” (John 14:12)

If we understand this right, Jesus came not only to be our Savior, and our Master, but our Model. He came to show us what all of us were meant to do. God would have us all BE just like Jesus.

We need to let that sink in. Because Jesus is telling us that “whoever” (meaning anyone!) is truly willing to really believe in Him, can and will do the kinds of things that Jesus did.

But why does that seem so implausible (if not impossible) to us?

washed cleanBecause we do not really understand who we are. We tend to talk a lot about being new creations in Christ. But we find it so difficult to go beyond making this whole thing about the forgiveness of our sins – only. We really do get the “washed clean” thing – but miss the “why He got us clean” thing, altogether.

God saved us for a purpose… and that purpose was so we could go and be Jesus, to whatever part of the world He takes us.

Sometimes we forget that the very definition of a disciple was layed out by our Lord Himself: “It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.” (Matt. 10:25) What Jesus is looking for, in us, is… Himself!

But how can any of us mere mortals act just like the Son of God? We are so frail and flawed and imperfect and prone to such self-centered behavior. But Jesus knew that! And He said it anyway.

Here’s the really cool thing… what Jesus is asking us to do (and be) He has already made possible. The provision to BE just like Jesus is already available to us.

walk-like-jesusBeing a new creation really means that we ARE fully equipped to walk as Jesus Himself did (1 John 2:6!). The main point of Jesus’ work, on our behalf, was that He made provision for that frail, flawed, imperfect, and self-centered person (that WAS who we were!) to die… and a totally new person to come alive. A new person that is strong and loving, and who seeks for the glory of God and the good of others…

You know… someone who acts just like Jesus did!

That new person is the new you.

Prayer focus: God, help me to truly understand that I AM new, because of You!
