“…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
This is one of the most important verses in all of the Bible.
It says so much – in so few words…
What is more, it gives us the picture that we need to live out the Christian life in all it’s fullness – in all that God intended for it to be.
It is the foundation upon which everything else rises.
I love the finality of it… the immediacy of it… the magnitude of it…
In one summary verse, the apostle was inspired to tell us everything we really need to know, when it comes to our relationship with God.
All that we were… has been replaced with everything we are now.
All because of what Jesus did for us.
We were blind… busted… broken – but all that has gone… it has passed away.
Now, we are new… totally, completely, entirely…
All because of Jesus, we are now made of different stuff.
Most all of our problems, as Christians, arise from the fact that we do not yet believe that we ARE new creations. We have accepted, and embraced, the paltry belief that we are just “works in progress…” that we are being mended… that we are becoming fixed (and, wow, is there ever so much work to do)…
We have mostly believed that we are BECOMING new creations .
But that is NOT what God said.
He declares that we already ARE new creations. That everything that was “old” has passed away.
And a new way of living has come.
It is not just one possible future (if we are faithful enough)… or a distant hope (if we do all the right things)…
it is a present reality. It is our current status with God – it is our identity, right now!
We ARE new creations!
Because of what Jesus did for us.
Now, we have to learn what that really means. And more importantly, we have to learn how to live in the fullness of what God has already done for us, through Jesus.
In our days ahead, we will explore the height and depths of what it means to be new, in Christ!
Prayer focus: God, help me to see that I AM a new creation, in Christ – right now!
